There are two adjustment to make, one with the lever down in draft control position and another with the lever up in position control. While the lift top is off it's best to replace the lift piston o-ring, remove and clean the control valve and check the cam pin for wear.

With the 8N they added a 4th forward gear and position control. The theory behind the lift operation is the same as the later models that I am more familiar with but the actual physical layout is different.
