May 21, 2014. #1. Looking for some answers. My Dads old Ford 3000 diesel ( a late 60's or 70's model) sat for ten years after he passed. I finally decided to start and use it. I have used it for the last 4 years and the hydraulics have been giving me alot of trouble. for acouple of years I could get them to work by bleeding the pump every time ...It carries power from the battery to the ignition switch. Make sure the connection is tight at both ends. Disconnect one battery cable connection before trying to tighten either the starter wire end or the switch end. I usually have to hold the key to start then as you say, find the sweet spot on the hi lo shifter for it to roll the starter over. The neutral safety switch is under the shifter cover. Has 2 wires going to it. I unhooked the tach cable from the generator and turned it with my fingers, the tach began to go up. Pull the line off the carb and crank the engine should get good pulses of fuel out line, at least a 1/4 cup after 5 seconds of cranking. If you find the flow is minimal which would really be only a dribble the way your engine is responding you will have to figure out where it is blocked.

Those rubber type hydraulic fittings weren't the best idea. What happens is due to vibration the metal gripping part of that rubber nut eats away at the steel line so it' doesn't grab so well.
